Avon Children's Center School Profile |
Reflections |

Plans to design and construct a school specifically for young children took two years. This included developing criteria for site selection and creating a classroom floor plan that incorporated unique features. The Avon Children's Center was opened in December 1986. Planned improvements continued through the years with the development of the outdoor space. Future plans call for the expansion of the nature trail and creation of a wildlife preserve. |
Families today face new challenges. Single parent families are not uncommon. The number of mothers entering the workplace continues to increase. Often, both parents work to meet family needs. Children raised now will face challenges in an age of information, automation and technology. These things are more evident now than when Quality Preschool, Inc. (QPI) was first conceived in 1983. The Avon Children's Center fulfilled the promise to provide a quality program for children in today's society. QPI's goal is to maintain and enhance the quality of education for young children at the Avon Children's Center through the use of continuous quality improvement . We would like to thank all of the children, parents, family and friends that have contributed to the success of our school. Quality Preschool, Inc. |

Facility Planning |
The school's curriculum is based upon the use of appropriate developmental practice. This method represents application of techniques that foster growth based on current knowledge in early human development. Criteria developed by The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) was adopted into the school's program in 1992. The Avon Children's Center continues to benefit in it's relationship with the NAEYC. We have generally been among the 20,000 to 30,000 attendees at each of the annual NAEYC conferences since 1983. |

Program Operation |

We began with eight children in one classroom . The second classroom was opened in 1988 to meet increased enrollment The full day kindergarten was established in 1989. A program specifically designed for part time attendance was implemented in 1990. The school initiated a self study project in 1991. This compared the schools performance to criteria established by the NAEYC. The program was successfully accredited in 1992. The "outdoor classroom" concept for a developmental playground took form that same year. The idea for building an outdoor space that reflected the learning center concept used in the classroom is unique to the area. The parent education program was implemented in 1993. This included launching the school's a monthly newsletter, "Parent Extension". A host of parent involvement activities followed including pot luck dinners, field trips, activity calendars and guest speakers. The availability of developmentally appropriate software led to the introduction of the computer learning centers in 1993. A video library was incorporated into the program in 1994. Woodworking was also added to the curriculum that year. Through the years many other features were added to enhance the program for the children and parents in the school. |
