Teachers Profiles

Carla Pires

 

 

Carla arrived in the United States from Cape Verde in 2000.  She became literate in English and obtained employment.  She worked her way through school and received a diploma from Brockton High.

 

Carla attended Massasoit Community College, majoring in Early Childhood Education.  She was assigned to Avon Children’s Center in the Fall of 2005 as a student teacher to complete her practicum.  Carla received an Associates Degree from Massasoit in 2006. 

 

Carla demonstrated exceptional abilities in working with children, planning and implementing curriculum.  She accepted a teaching position at Avon Children’s Center becoming a member of the educational team in 2005.  Carla became Director qualified from the MA Department of Early Education & Care in 2005.

 

Carla is currently enrolled in the Bachelors program for Early Childhood Education at Bridgewater State College.  She also maintains a First Aid & CPR certification from the National Safety Council.

 

Carla has proven to be invaluable in working with bilingual individuals.  She has helped communicate with non English speaking children, parents and caregivers enrolled in the program.  She has provided the teaching team with a unique perspective, expanding the multi-cultural experience and abilities of the program. 

 

Carla is one of seven brothers and sisters in her immediate family.  She has one daughter and resides in the South Metro Boston area.   Carla enjoys value shopping and participating in activities associated with a large family.  

 

Glenn Peterson

 

Prior to 1984, Glenn worked as a Resident Engineer, overseeing construction projects throughout New England.  He accumulated over 20 years experience in construction management working for Boston area engineering and consulting firms.

 

Diane and Glenn teamed up their experience in education and construction respectively to create a quality education program for young children.  Together they planned, designed and custom built Avon Children’s Center.

 

Glenn, as Co-Founder & President of Quality Preschool, Inc., the school’s corporate name, is also the school’s Administrator and part of the teaching team.   He has attended NAEYC conferences in Denver, CO.,  Anaheim, CA. and Hartford CT.

 

Glenn acquired a Massachusetts Stationary Engineers License upon graduating from New Bedford Vocational High School.  He holds an Associates Degree in Environmental Management from Bristol Community College in Fall River, MA. Glenn completed coursework and training through the Early Childhood Education program at  Massasoit Community College.  He attended Quincy College to complete Child Development studies and is Director II Qualified by Massachusetts Department of Early Education & Care.  Glenn has consulted on program layout and construction and is a former member of the Massachusetts Department of Early Education & Care, Region 5, Advisory Council.  Glenn is  First Aid & CPR certified by the National Safety Council.  His interests & activities include camping, biking, fishing and spending time with his son Michael.

Diane Peterson

 

Diane (Minnehan) Peterson co-founded Avon Children’s Center in 1986 and is the school’s Treasurer and Director Diane is also the program’s behavior specialist & Kindergarten teacher.  She is a lifetime member and conference attendee of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).  Diane has also validated programs as part of the Association’s accreditation process.

 

Diane obtained a Bachelor of Science from Bridgewater State College in 1978.  She majored in Special Education and Elementary Education.  Diane earned a State of Massachusetts Department of Education Teacher Certification in Elementary Education, Kindergarten through eighth grade. She also holds a state certification in Early Childhood Education, Kindergarten through third grade and Special Needs.

 

Diane attended Wheelock College for Administration and has a Director II Qualification from Massachusetts Department of Early Education & Care.  Diane has consulted for Early Childhood Education programs and has worked as a Behavioral Therapist.  She is First Aid & CPR certified by the National Safety Council.

 

Diane is native to the town of Avon.  She attended the Avon schools from elementary through high school.  She is married and has one son, Michael.  Her interests and activities include camping, biking, puzzles, reading novels and biographies. 

Heather Gleason

 

Heather was introduced to Avon Children’s Center as a student through the Massasoit Community College Early Childhood Education program in 1999.  She joined the educational team in 2001 as a fulltime teacher.

 

Heather obtained her Director qualifications from Massachusetts Department of Early Education & Care in 2003.  In June of 2005, Heather completed her course work in Early Childhood Education and was awarded an Associates Degree from Fisher College.

 

Heather demonstrates a particular talent and ability working with young children and individuals with particular needs.  She became Avon Children’s Center’s Lead Teacher in 2005.

 

Heather excels in classroom material selection and curriculum design based upon the skill level of the group and individual’s needs.  Heather’s dedication to the children and the school program is apparent in her material selection and activity planning.

 

She is certified in  CPR and First Aid by the National Safety Council through Health Education Resources (H.E.R.) in Bridgewater, MA.

 

Heather is married and is raising a family in the metro Brockton area.  She attended school in Stoughton, MA and was active in the arts including stage and theatre.

 

Heather frequently makes family visits to Martha’s Vineyard and enjoys reading and going to the movies.

 

Kathryn Shannon

 

 

Kathryn attended Johnson Wales University in Providence, RI after leaving Southeastern Regional Vocational High School as a Certified Nursing Assistant and Child Development Associate.  She was awarded a full scholarship upon receiving her high school diploma.

 

Through accelerated course work and advanced studies, Kathryn received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Entrepreneurship in 2007.   She completed  Early Childhood Education studies at Massasoit Community College and received an Associates Degree in May, 2009.  Kathryn is currently enrolled in a Masters Program for Early Childhood Education through American International College in Springfield, MA.

 

Kathryn worked at Avon Children’s Center as a student teacher in the Massasoit Community College Early Childhood Program.  She accepted a full time teaching position at the school after completing her college practium.  Kathryn earned  her Lead Teacher certification from Massachusetts Department of Early Education & Care in September, 2008.  She is also CPR and First Aid certified.

 

Kathryn’s natural abilities in working with children is underscored by her training and education in the field.  Her enthusiasm and strong work ethic has been a great addition to the educational team.

 

Kathryn enjoys activities with family & friends, creates quilts and reads fiction (Stephanie Meyer) as a pastime.
