A Nature Trail was incorporated in the program to provide children opportunity to explore the outdoor environment. The trail is scaled for young children’s experience.
Features on the Nature Trail include trail side displays, gardens, bird feeders, artifacts and other items of interest. The Nature Trail Observation Deck is an exciting destination point. The deck is used for listening and sight games, story telling and other activities.
Visiting parents are encouraged to view the trail during their tour. |

The school’s playground is titled the ‘Outdoor Classroom’. This location was designed around the learning center philosophy that is used in the classrooms of the program. This fenced in area contains distinct spots for various activities. They include a large sand box for sensory development, a play house for dramatic play, gross motor area, ball play, and a children’s garden. There are also areas for fine motor materials, relaxation, and art.
The outdoor areas of the program are used all year round. |

The Avon Children's Center was established to provide a high quality childcare service. Children who develop good social skills project a positive self image. Our program emphasizes development of peer relationships, cooperation and the importance of learning through play. The schools goal is to advance child development. The program promotes a child’s self control, creative expression, cognitive skills, language and physical confidence through that inherent love for learning.

Philosophy |

The 3 1/2 acre site at the end of Highland Street in Avon provides a safe and secure setting in a residential area. Outdoor curriculum is one of the distinguishing features of the program.
The school property was developed for children’s use of the outdoors. This includes specific areas offering children a variety of activities as they explore the outdoor environment.
There are three distinct areas on the school grounds for outdoor activities. The ‘Open Space’ is located in the front of the school. The gazebo in this area acts as a staging area for field games, water play, group readings, story telling and other activities.
A Nature Trail was designed to accommodate field trips on the school property.
The ‘Outdoor Classroom’ acts as a primary use area incorporating playground equipment and materials for use throughout the year. Outdoor curriculum and materials are planned during the warmer months for the Summer Program. |

Outdoor Areas |

The curriculum is designed to meet the needs of the group and individuals within the program. This includes material selection to expand children’s experience in all areas of development.
Observational assessment is utilized to characterize children’s skill level. A developmental approach reinforces children’s growth through concrete experience.
Emphasis is placed on use of language for communication of one’s needs, problem solving and conflict resolution. The small group setting provides young children with a comfortable social stage for learning about others and oneself.
Material selection and curriculum activities follow a weekly theme during the school year. Teachers plan together in advance. Monthly staff meetings track program progress. Changes are made to refine activities to meet children’s needs.

Teachers at the school work together as a team. This approach provides each member with support as they exercise their individual strengths. Areas of expertise in Early Childhood Education include behavior management, curriculum design, material selection and classroom environment. Teachers in the program pride themselves in providing individual attention to the children and their parents.
Teachers qualification exceed MA Department of Early Education and Care requirements. All staff are Director qualified by the state. Degrees in Early Childhood Education compliment all members of the teaching ensemble. Teachers hold current CPR and First Aid training certificates through the National Safety Council.
Teachers meet regularly to assess program needs, track goals and review performance. A continuous education plan provides educators with new knowledge through course training, seminars, conferences and associations.

The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) is an organization with a sole purpose of promoting the development of young children. The Association continuously gathers information regarding early human development. This knowledge is translated into criteria that progressive schools can adopt to enhance children’s learning.
Avon Children’s Center was among the first 100 programs in Massachusetts to be accredited by the NAEYC in 1993. The Association has since reinvented the Accreditation process. Avon Children's Center is proud to have been among the initial group of programs in Massachusetts to have successfully completed the revised Accreditation process.

Avon Children’s Center was founded in 1986. The building was custom designed and built specifically for the Early Education Program.
Two classrooms provide children with a comfortable setting for a relatively small group. Developmental activity centers were incorporated into the classroom design to provide for all areas of growth.
The learning centers cover aspects of growth in gross and fine motor development. Artistic expression, writing, sensory exploration, language, speech and cognitive development are provided for throughout the classroom.
Children are encouraged to choose areas of interest. Teachers plan curriculum and materials to provide children with experience across all areas of development.
